Virtual Web Hosting is having a web site at your unique domain name without having to manage the hardware and software in house. MacHost specializes in Virtual Web Hosting which means that you can find a home for your web site on our active Macintosh web servers and establish a presence on the Internet. We can help register your own domain name which will become your unique address on the World Wide Web. Having your own domain name does not suggest that you are renting web space, and, since email can be addressed to your domain (eg. yourname.com ) you will not have to announce a new email address if you change internet providers. Top of page Can I have my own domain name? Yes. MacHost can register your domain name for you as part of your account set-up. Can I check domain name availability? Yes. You can check domain availability direct from our web site. Top of page What is the fee for domain registration? $14.95 registers a new domain name with Wild West Domains. Our parent company (Hamilton & Bond) is a reseller of domain name services thru Wild West Domains. If you already own your domain name, you can transfer it to Wild West Domains for $14.95 and get a 1 year extension on its expiration (it's even less when you transfer 2 or more domains to Wild West Domains). Top of page How long does it take before my domain name is active? Once the InterNIC announces that your domain name has been registered (or transferred, if applicable), it usually takes about 48-hours before it is active. All internet providers must update their records (DNS tables) to reflect new site locations. This is called propagation. Can I transfer existing domain name to MacHost? Yes. When you submit our online sign-up form, be sure to specify that you are requesting a transfer and NOT a new domain. You should keep your service at the present site while waiting for Internic to complete the transfer. We will provide you with a temporary address so you can mirror the site on our server. All email and web pages will still be accessed from the current site. When Internic announces the completion of the transfer there is a propagation period where visitors could go to either site. At the end of the propagation you should contact the previous host to have them delete the old domain from their records and update their DNS record. If you use this same provider for your Internet access you will not be able to access your domain site at MacHost.com until they update their DNS. Top of page Can multiple domains point to the same HTML files? Yes, but you will be responsible for the domain registration charges for each domain, and a $50 set-up fee is needed for each separate domain. Is 3GB of data transfer going to be enough to support my website? Our experience has shown that 3GB/month will be more than enough bandwidth for the average web site. Depending on the quantity and sizes of your files, this could support many thousands of hits per month. Plan #4 (MacHost Partners) is designed for extremely active sites with throughput of 5 gigabytes or more per month. If you do go over your 3GB allotment, additional 3GB blocks are billed at $24.95 each to your account. Top of page How do I upgrade from one plan to another? You can subscribe to a different plan by sending your request to . You will not be required to pay another set-up fee. Top of page Will I have unlimited access to update my pages? You have unlimited access via FTP 24-hours a day. As such, you can create and maintain your web pages on your own computer and upload files to your web site at your leisure. How do I transfer files to my web site ? Files must be transferred to the web server via File Transport Protocol (FTP). If you need FTP software, we recommend Transmit it's very Mac-like and easy to use. You can download a copy at http://www.panic.com/transmit/download.html Another popular, and very Mac-like FTP program is Netfinder. Fetch has not been updated for many years, however it remains popular. Many authoring programs such as BBEdit (It Doesn't Suck), Adobe GoLive and Macromedia Dreamweaver include built-in FTP capabilities. Be sure to use the current versions of FTP software to ensure their compatibility with the contemporary system software features we're using. An FTP tutorial is available for first time users. Top of page Can I use my account for commercial purposes? Yes, you can use your account for commercial purposes. The World Wide Web has become a most efficient and cost-effective means of making information available to the users of the internet community. MacHost will soon be adding secure processing which provides an environment whereby payment information (such as a credit card number) can be transmitted from web browser to web server in an encrypted mode. Can I resell space within my own account? Yes. You can resell space within your account. However, you will be responsible for its content and data transfer. It will not be possible to acquire multiple account passwords for FTP access. If a separate domain name is desired to point to a different set of html documents, then this would become a new and separate account. Top of page Do you accept international orders? Yes. We are pleased to have customers around the world and we're as close as your computer. If desired, we can host non-US domain name extensions. What contract and payment terms are available? We bill at quarterly increments and require a minimum three month contract. We accept credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Discover). All charges are in US dollars. Do you offer technical support to customers? Yes, but on a limited basis. Our basic pricing plans are designed to serve experienced Mac web designers who already know the ins and outs of FTP and web construction. You can always e-mail questions or comments about our server environment/performance to and we will respond quickly. But, we just do not have the time or expertise to advise people on how to create a web site, or conduct FTP sessions, or write code or repair broken code. What we can do is refer you to design and programming consultants. Also, there are a number of mailing lists available now addressing virtually all aspects of web design from html authoring through javascript, Lasso/Filemaker, Shockwave and more. These lists are the internet's best source of advice and assistance. Top of page How long does it take to set up a new account? Orders submitted before 6pm which include payment information are often processed the same day! Once an account is set up an activation notice will be sent you via email including a userid, password, and FTP hostname. You can begin uploading files to your new web site immediately. Domain account users will be given a temporary URL to access their site via the web prior to the completion of either domain registration or transfer. How do I place an order? You can place an order for a MacHost account directly from our web site 24 hours a day. Top of page Dial-up internet access. We offer dial-up internet access from the 630 area code only. You can use us for PPP internet access at $19.95/month, however long distance charges will accrue to your phone bill if you live outside the 630 area code so a local provider may be less expensive. On the other hand, we are all-Mac and we can help you get your Mac connected quickly and easily and time is money. Additional E-mail Accounts. Ten (10) e-mail accounts are included with your MacHost sign-up. They may be either POP3 or forwarded e-mail accounts. Additional e-mail accounts are available a $1 each per month. What versions of Filemaker do you support ?
